Concussion Managment
Concussion Facts
Concussion is defined as a transient neurologic condition following a blow to the head, with an alteration in brain function, but no structural damage or bruising. There are at least 500,000 in High School football each year, with probably many more unreported. What happens is analogous to hitting [Ctrl] [Alt] [Delete] on your computer, but the brain takes 5-7 days to fully ‘re-boot’. During the healing phase, further activity or injury can produce permanent damage to brain cells.

The ImPACT System
The University of Pittsburgh has developed a computer-based assessment of brain function, known as ImPACT. The most important consideration when managing an athlete with a concussion is when to resume training or competition. Robbing blood and oxygen from vulnerable brain cells, to supply working muscles, can cause permanent damage. We use the ImPACT system to help guide our clinical decision-making. Although post-injury testing does provide valuable information, the best results are obtained when data is compared with a non-injury baseline test. For just $20.00, Champions can screen your athlete, and save the information in our data bank.
