Back pain can be complex and confusing to both physicians and patients alike. Actually, in most cases the cause is mechanical, the result of a disturbance in normal biomechanics, and best treated without surgery. The correct diagnosis can also be made through careful examination, and not with some expensive imaging study. Certainly MRI’s may be useful, but fully 25% of abnormalities seen on them are asymptomatic, and not the cause of a patient’s pain.
